The Charlotte Economics Club is proud to welcome Scott Bessent, 79th Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, to Charlotte on September 2, 2026.
Following the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting in Asheville, Secretary Bessent will join Charlotte Economics Club President Michael Blanco for a fireside chat examining the economic and financial issues shaping the United States and global economy.
The conversation will explore the post-G20 outlook, Treasury markets and long-term yields, U.S.-China trade and critical supply chains, economic statecraft, American growth and investment, digital assets and cross-border payments, and the role of artificial intelligence in productivity and economic growth.
As Secretary of the Treasury, Secretary Bessent is responsible for the Department’s mission to promote a strong, stable, and prosperous economy while safeguarding the nation’s financial system and national security. He brings more than 40 years of experience in global investment management and has engaged with international leaders and central bankers across at least 60 countries. He is widely regarded for his expertise in currencies and fixed-income markets.
Before entering public service, Secretary Bessent was the founder, Chief Executive Officer, and Chief Investment Officer of Key Square Capital Management, a global macro investment firm. He previously served as Chief Investment Officer of Soros Fund Management and as Managing Partner of the firm’s London office. Earlier in his career, his work spanned major periods of change across global banking, credit, currency, and financial markets.
Secretary Bessent earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University, where he later taught economic history as an adjunct professor.
